Key government agencies overseeing the maritime industry came together in a significant display of solidarity to safeguard Filipino seafarers by signing the Pledge of Commitment on April 10 at the Amosup Convention Hall in Manila. Led by House Committee on Overseas Workers Affairs chairman Rep. Ron Salo, the signing ceremony included key officials such as Undersecretary Felicitas Bay, Secretary Enrique Manalo, and other prominent figures in the industry.
The Pledge of Commitment was widely supported by various maritime groups and stakeholders, including ALMA, JMG, FAME, PMMA, MAAP, and others. Rep. Salo stressed the importance of upholding the rights and welfare of Filipino seafarers, emphasizing that the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers advocates for fairness for both seafarers and maritime employers. The law aims to address issues such as ambulance-chasing, which has led to fraudulent and costly injury claims against maritime employers, jeopardizing the livelihood of Filipino seafarers.
Government representatives expressed their full support for the Magna Carta, ensuring the protection and promotion of seafarers’ rights and welfare. The law, which aligns with international maritime standards, establishes comprehensive protection for seafarers both at sea and onshore, guaranteeing fair compensation, adequate training, and access to social and welfare benefits. Key provisions include mandatory shipboard training and fair treatment in case of illness or injury, reinforcing the country’s commitment to the well-being of Filipino seafarers.
