Maersk’s Singapore-flagged container ship, Maersk Chattogram, is set to undergo its inaugural planned drydocking at L&T Shipbuilding’s Kattupalli Shipyard near Chennai, marking a significant operational milestone in the partnership between A.P. Moller-Maersk and Larsen & Toubro (L&T). The vessel is scheduled to arrive at the yard on October 20, 2026, contingent on operational and weather factors.
This drydocking is the first tangible outcome of the Memorandum of Understanding established between Maersk and L&T during India Maritime Week 2025, which aims to foster collaboration in shipbuilding, repair, and the enhancement of global maritime standards in India. The project encompasses a comprehensive 10-year lifecycle maintenance plan, including a special survey and the maintenance of the vessel’s hull, machinery, and propulsion systems.
Moreover, the drydocking will take place using India’s largest Shiplift system, allowing for extensive inspections and repairs. It will involve cooperation between Maersk’s fleet and technical teams and various Indian subcontractors and service providers, emphasizing safe execution and quality outcomes.
This initiative underscores the increasing confidence in India’s ship repair capabilities and the potential for the country to become a notable global maritime hub. Both Maersk and L&T view this project as a step towards strengthening domestic supply chains and enhancing India’s position in the maritime industry.
