Dual-Fuel Ammonia Engine Drives Next-Gen Eco-Friendly Bulk Carrier

Dual-fuel gas carrier underway at sea, representing ammonia-fuelled shipping

Anglo-Eastern has played a significant role in the development of CMB.TECH’s Mineral Europa, the first dry bulk carrier powered by ammonia, which has recently completed its inaugural voyage. This 210,000 dwt Newcastlemax vessel, constructed by CSSC Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding, is equipped with a WinGD dual-fuel ammonia engine and a Sun Rui Ammonia Fuel Supply System, allowing it to operate on either ammonia or traditional marine fuel. This flexibility is crucial as the infrastructure for ammonia bunkering evolves.

The partnership between Anglo-Eastern and CMB.TECH began in 2018, focusing initially on alternative fuels such as hydrogen before shifting to ammonia. By 2020, Anglo-Eastern Technical Services was actively developing the vessel’s safety protocols, fuel configurations, and initial engineering designs. The project received necessary approvals from Lloyd’s Register and ABS in 2021. A key engineering challenge involved integrating ammonia storage and safety systems without compromising cargo capacity.

Anglo-Eastern also provided support in newbuilding supervision, technical management, and crew training, developing specific procedures for operations, bunkering, and emergencies. The training included advanced simulations to prepare the crew for various scenarios. The successful launch of Mineral Europa marks a significant achievement in the decarbonization efforts of CMB.TECH, with plans for more ammonia-powered vessels on the horizon. Anglo-Eastern remains committed to assisting shipowners in exploring various propulsion technologies tailored to their needs.
