Passengers aboard Royal Caribbean International’s cruise ship Odyssey of the Seas were part of a dramatic rescue at sea during a 7-day Greek Island cruise. The Hellenic Coast Guard confirmed that 77 migrants were taken aboard the cruise ship and transported to a Greek port, highlighting the ongoing migrant crisis between Greece and Turkey.
The rescue operation was initiated after an unnamed Maltese-flagged cargo ship spotted a distressed sailboat overloaded with migrants in the Ionian Sea. The Odyssey of the Seas, a massive vessel with a capacity of 4,198 passengers, changed course to assist in the rescue mission, resulting in the successful transfer of the stranded migrants to safety.
Despite the unexpected turn of events, the cruise ship continued its journey, bypassing its scheduled port call at Santorini and heading towards Kusadasi, Turkey. Passengers on board were kept informed by the captain about the situation, with videos circulating online showcasing the tender towing the sailboat towards the Odyssey of the Seas. The Hellenic Coast Guard reported that the rescued migrants would be taken to the southern Greek port town of Kalamata for further assistance.
